Grief & Bereavement
Gabi's Grief & Bereavement Boxes
Our Grief and Bereavement boxes are named in memory of Sheffield's Gabi Smith who tragically died aged 12. We hope and pray that these resources will offer help, advice and some comfort to schools and families coping with loss.
We have a large selection of story books, factual books and teacher resource books about grief and loss available to borrow free of charge for schools and church groups. Some books are overtly Christian and many are not. They are often stories designed to start a conversation with a class or child. You are welcome to borrow a selection of the books or a whole collection. We can often deliver them to your school. Please get in touch, or see this flyer for more information.
Feedback we have received about the grief boxes:
"The books from the grief box were absolutely spot on. I've been really struck in the last few weeks how taboo death and dying is for many adults, and I'm really proud of how we've supported ......to thoughtfully process and talk about what's been going on."
Here are some resources and organisations that help children and young people deal with grief:
The website provides information and signposting to resources to help all those who have been bereaved, whatever the cause of their loss. Visit www.ataloss.org for more information.
This lesson plan based on the book 'Badger's Parting Gifts' by Susan Varley helps children to cope with loss, change and bereavement. Click on the picture to view the plan. There is a lovely reading of the book which can be found here.
Cruse offers support, advice and information to children, young people and adults when someone dies. Visit www.cruse.org.uk for more information.
Hope Again is the youth website of Cruse Bereavement Care. It is a safe place where young people can learn from other young people, how to cope with grief, find information, advice and feel less alone. There is a helpful film (10 mins) made by young people to answer FAQ about grief. Visit www.hopeagain.org.uk for more information.
Jo Siddall of Patchwork Clocks has written a Christian book for children aged 5-9 who are dealing with grief and beareavement. It is a ‘story rhyme’ that invites the child to be part of the bigger picture. Children can feel excluded and unsure of what is happening around them. This gentle book is just one of many resources that can be used when little ones grieve. Click on the picture or heading to buy the book on Amazon.
Rainbows Bereavement Support offers high quality training in bereavement and loss, and supports communities in reviewing or developing their own bereavement policy and procedures. Their vision is for every child and young person in every school in Great Britain, grieving a significant and often devastating loss in their lives, to be understood and supported appropriately. Click on the logo above to visit their website.
Create personalised illustrated books in memory of a child, relative or friend who has died. The simple story of hope tells how we can remember a lost one through the world around us, even when they are no longer here with us on Earth. There is a girl and boy version and the child’s name is used on the cover and in the story. Price £22.
Winston's Wish is a charity helping bereaved children, young people and their families. The website includes a section for schools, and some lesson plan ideas. There is also an interactive section for young people. Also links to some publications specific to child bereavement and coping with loss. They also have online bereavement training for schools.
